About Aparant – Upcycling Plastic for a Sustainable Future

Our Name, Our Inspiration

Aparant (also known as Aparantaka) means “Western Border” and historically refers to the northern part of the Konkan region on India’s western coast. Inspired by this rich heritage, Aparant is proud to create eco-friendly, upcycled products from plastic waste, promoting sustainability and responsible consumption.

Our Mission

At Aparant, we believe in transforming waste into value. By upcycling plastic waste, we craft trendy, durable, and practical products while protecting the environment. Our initiative not only reduces non-biodegradable waste but also provides meaningful employment to artisans, particularly women in rural communities.

What We Do

We follow a meticulous upcycling process to ensure sustainability at every step:

Plastic Collection

1. Plastic Collection

Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM) collects plastic waste from households, schools, and shops.

Segregation & Cleaning
2. Segregation & Cleaning

The plastic is sorted, cleaned, and dried to prepare for upcycling.

Handloom Weaving
3. Handloom Weaving

The plastic is cut into strips and woven into fabric on traditional handlooms.

Product Creation
4. Product Creation

This eco-friendly fabric is used to make stylish and functional products like pouches, purses, and bags.

Since the entire process is manual, we proudly offer full-time employment to over a dozen artisans, most of whom are women, fostering both environmental responsibility and economic empowerment.

Our Partnership with Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM)

Aparant’s plastic waste collection is powered by Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra (SNM), Chiplun, a renowned NGO dedicated to environmental conservation. Established in 1992, SNM has led impactful initiatives, including:

Marine Turtle Conservation: A movement that led to the celebrated Velas Turtle Festival
Wildlife Protection: Projects safeguarding the Indian Swiftlet, White-Bellied Sea Eagle, Vultures, and Indian Pangolin
Scientific Research: Studying and documenting breeding patterns of 30 bird species
Community Awareness: Conducting conservation programs in schools and colleges across Konkan
Eye & Body Donation Initiatives: Pioneering voluntary donation programs in Konkan

Innovating with Plastic Waste Management

SNM has now expanded into solid waste management in Chiplun and nearby areas, promoting composting and organized plastic recycling. The plastic collected is:

Sorted into seven types for recycling

Upcycled into handloom fabric, creating sustainable products like bags and pouches

Each bag saves 10-50 plastic bags from ending up in landfills

At Aparant, we take this initiative forward by ensuring these products reach conscious consumers who believe in sustainability.

Recognized for its contributions, SNM’s work has been featured in Maharashtra State Board textbooks, highlighting its impact on nature conservation.
